Every week we’ll post a short snippet from Ashley’s sermon from that Sunday. Here’s a few lines from what he said this week as part of an All Age Service that explored the story of Daniel and the lions.
All these stories in the opening chapters of Daniel are not really stories of miracle rescues for movie-makers to exploit. To think of them like that is to take away their power. For these are stories of a God who gives his people life no matter what their circumstances or situation. These are stories to encourage living when it would be easier just to give up.
Daniel’s real enemies were not the lions but rather those who despised him for being a foreigner, for taking the job they thought was theirs, and for worshiping a different god in a different way. And throughout the generations readers of Daniel have also faced hostility based on similar ignorance and intolerance.
This story reminds them and it reminds us that whatever life throws at us – whether that’s sickness, racism, religious persecution, or any other ‘lion’ – God is not only with us but he is able to give us life even in the midst of death. Nothing can separate us from the love of this God… not even lions!
