Every week we’ll post a short snippet from Ashley’s sermon from that Sunday. Here’s a few lines from what he said this week as he reflected on the coming of the magi to Jesus.
Since the very beginning God’s plan, God’s dream, has always been to share his blessing with all the people of the world.
He made his promise to bless Abraham and Abraham’s descendants so that they might be a blessing to others.
Ephesians tells us that God’s ultimate purpose is to break down the barriers, to end the distinction between ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’, to unite people through one name.
And, as one commentator writes, “Matthew reminds us that such distinctions began to erode with the coming of Christ, who was revealed to some who were thought to be outside and paradoxically rejected by many who were thought to be on the inside.” (Mark Allan Powell, Working Preacher, commentary for 6 Jan 2008)
In the coming of the magi we start to see God’s widening embrace.
