Each week we’ll post a short snippet from Ashley’s sermon from that Sunday. Here are a few lines from what he said this week, the first Sunday of Advent.
I think that what makes Advent a difficult season for many of us is that we are not very good at waiting for things and nor do we really like surprises.
Both push back against our desire to be in control. We want things to happen at a time of our choosing. And we want to know what’s going to happen so we are ready for it.
But the future that we see in the Bible is not ours to control. Only God the Father, Jesus said, knows the day and the hour.
We are told to be ready, as if the future might suddenly arrive at any moment, but we are not told what to be ready for… except that it will be unexpected.
